Local Hot Spots
Geraldton has several excellent sailing locations. We have outlined the more popular ones below:
Point Moore
Ideal for wave riding and bump and jump sailing. The Point is the windiest location in Geraldton as it is situated at the end of a land mass that juts 4 kilometres out to sea and therefore receives the wind first. It is perfect in the mornings for beginners with the late morning and afternoon providing the right conditions for intermediate advanced windsurfing.
Point Moore has a grassed rigging area and shower / toilet facilities. The wave sailing locations at the point are..
Hell's Gates - a left-hander that breaks fast and can hold a huge swell. Not for the faint hearted, this is for advanced and expert riders only.
Front Yards - another fast breaking left-hander that breaks into a deep water channel, making for a softer landing if your timing is out. A popular spot for all levels except for when mast high plus.
Kiddies Corner - A small, boom high, left-hander that breaks in shallow water for beginner to intermediate wave sailors.
St Georges Beach
Sunset BeachIdeal for bump and jump and flat water sailors for beginners to advanced wave sailors. St Georges Beach has a grassed rigging area and shower / toilet facilities. 150 metres offshore is a reef that can create a small to moderate wave that is ideal for learning jumps and wave sailing techniques. St Georges is also popular with beginners learning to water start, gibe, etc.
Coronation BeachIdeal for wave sailing when it's working and also bump and jump. It has a grassed rigging area and shower / toilet facilities. The reef, 150 metres offshore is known as Pipeline and only works when there is a huge swell which creates a left-hander with a few breaking sections. An ideal location to learn wave sailing skills.
Located 28 kilometres North of Geraldton, Coronation offers ideal conditions for wave jumping and bump and jump. Although a little way out of town, Coronation is a very popular spot as the reef is one hundred metres offshore, creating a large expanse of flat water ideal for generating lots of speed to pull off that elusive forward loop. There are designated areas for windsurfing and kiting to ensure that all beachusers enjoy their respective sport. There is a car park, shade shelters and basic toilet facilities however you will need to bring along your own food and drinks.
Separation Point
Great for kiting. You'll find that a quite a few locals will kite here. Generally there is a sandy beach to launch your kite from although at times the seaweed banks are quite thick.
Other Locations
Other ActivitiesKalbarri - About 160 kilometres North of Geraldton the tourist Mecca of Kalbarri offers some fairly good flat water sailing in the river mouth of the Murchison river. You'll need to allow yourself a good day or an overnight trip.
